IDAHO CITY -- Boise County Sheriff Ben Roeber announced Tuesday he would step down from his position at the end of the month.
Roeber said he was resigning to take another job in the area. The sheriff declined to say what his new position would be, but told KTVB he will work for a state agency and plans to remain in the Boise County area.
The resignation goes into effect April 30. Boise County Chief Deputy Dale Rogers will take control of the sheriff's office until a new sheriff is appointed.
"I am looking forward to starting a new chapter in my life and will take with me all of the great memories and relationships I have made over the years," he wrote in his resignation letter. "I love Boise County and will continue to live in this great community, however, this opportunity is what is best for myself, my family, and my career."
Roeber held the position of sheriff for nine years. His full resignation letter is included below.
I am turning in my letter of resignation for the Office of Sheriff effective April 30th 2016. I have been offered and accepted another public service position. I understand that any transition is difficult and offer any assistance I might be able to provide the next Sheriff. As current Chief Deputy Dale Rogers will assume all duties until a new Sheriff is appointed.
Leaving Boise County after spending half of my life working here comes with both sadness and excitement. I am looking forward to starting a new chapter in my life and will take with me all of the great memories and relationships I have made over the years. I love Boise County and will continue to live in this great community, however, this opportunity is what is best for myself, my family, and my career. I have worked, along with my staff, very hard to make the Sheriff's Office better than what it was when I took over nine years ago and I feel I have accomplished that.
I cannot thank the board enough for their tireless efforts to the citizens of Boise County. You three have been a fantastic board to work with and I have great confidence in your ability to lead the County heading forward. I would also like to thank the other Elected Officials and department heads for their dedicated service. Individually you all do great work and when we all worked collectively I think we see the County at its finest. Each of you have helped me in ways that I cannot fully express my gratitude and look forward to seeing the amazing things you do in the future.
I continue to champion the cause for retention of Sheriff's Office employees as I hope you understand just how fantastic of a staff you have at the Sheriff's Office. Everyone, and their family, sacrifices day in and day out for this community and urge the board to continue to find ways to compensate all employees.
To the fine people of Boise County, words cannot express my gratitude to you all. You all have supported me my entire life both professionally and personally. I will miss serving as your Sheriff but look forward to this next challenge.
Respectfully,
Ben Roeber
