Boise elementary school evacuated on first day due to gas smell

Gas was smelled inside the school, but the leak was in the neighborhood nearby. Students were removed and sent to Adams Elementary for roughly an hour.

BOISE, Idaho — Roosevelt Elementary School in Boise had to be evacuated on Wednesday, the first day of school, at the request of Intermountain Gas, according to the Boise School District.

Intermountain Gas responded to the school at roughly 10:40 a.m., where they found a leak in the nearby neighborhood, not in the school. The gas company cleared the school as a safety measure. Intermountain Gas cleared the school for students and faculty to return around 11:45 a.m., a news release said.

Students and faculty went to Adams Elementary, where they were served lunch. They then were able to walk back to Roosevelt Elementary.

Wednesday's dismissal will take place at 1:15 p.m., as originally planned.

The principals of Roosevelt and Adams Elementary Schools thanked staff and students for a safe evacuation, and to the Adams Elementary staff and students for being gracious hosts, the news release said.
