BOISE, Idaho — Ridge to Rivers announced that some Boise Foothills trails will close for the winter season on Dec. 1, as a way to protect critical habitat and prevent trail damage.
Closures start and end dates will vary depending on the conditions of each trail, Ridge to Rivers stated in a news release. All closures are listed on the Ridge to Rivers interactive map.
"These seasonal closures are an important part of our conservation goals for Boise's open space reserves," Boise Parks and Recreation Director Doug Holloway said. "The Boise Foothills are home to many species, and winter is a crucial time of year to protect critical habitat and these important environmental areas."
Three locations will close, effective Dec. 1. This year, the new Hawkins Range Reserve is on the list for annual winter trail closures.
- Landslide Loop Trail #70: Closed annually from Dec. 1 to March 31.
- 8th Street Extension Road: The road is closed to all vehicles and the gate will be closed. It will be closed Dec. 1 to May 15.
- Hawkins Range Reserve: Closed seasonally from Dec. 1 to April 30.
In addition to the usual annual closures, Ridge to Rivers may close two new trails to prevent damage due to mud. Both closures will go into effect when weather conditions worsen and the trails becomes consistently muddy, said the release. The closures of these trails are weather-dependent. They start immediately when established and can be expected to open in early-March.
- Old Pen Trail #15A: Trailhead parking will not affect the trail closure.
- Ridge Crest Trail #20: This trail is prone to muddy conditions due to the high clay content in the soil.
"We began closing these trails because they are highly susceptible to irreversible damage if used when muddy. These closures protect the trail system during muddy trail season, and we appreciate the cooperation of our users in advance," Ridge to Rivers Trail Manager David Gordon said.
There may be other trails that will close seasonally. Ridge to Rivers will continue to assess the trails and update residents when decisions are made.
As of Nov. 29, most trails were considered to be in good condition, however, often frozen until mid-day, according to Ridge to Rivers. With upcoming rain and snow, Ridge to Rivers warns trail users that if they encounter soft, muddy trails - to turn around and try another route.
