Boise High School student in police custody after bringing unloaded gun to school

Principal Deb Watts said the student did not bring ammunition, is in police custody and will face legal and school consequences

BOISE, Idaho — A Boise High School student is in police custody after bringing an unloaded gun to school.

According to Principal Deb Watts, the incident happened Monday, Sept. 30. No one was hurt, the student had no ammunition and will face both school and legal consequences.

"While this situation is unsettling, this is a strong example of the "See Something, Say Something" principle, as we were notified of the gun's presence on campus and were able to take immediate action," Watts stated in an email. "We encourage you to use this as an opportunity to speak to your student about reporting any unsafe situations at school and in our community to an adult or by calling 208-343-COPS."

The principal stressed that there is no ongoing threat to the school community. Click here to view the school board's policy on weapons.

The Boise Police Department released a statement on Tuesday about the incident:

On September 30, 2024, around 1:15pm a Boise Police SRO was contacted about a possible firearm on campus at Boise High School. Officers worked with school administrators and an SRO quickly located the student suspected of having the firearm.  When officers attempted to speak with the student and search her backpack, she refused and held tightly to the backpack.   Due to the report that there was a firearm on school grounds, officers did search the backpack and located an unloaded handgun.  The student denied having intentions to harm anyone.  Following additional investigation, she was booked into juvenile detention on two charges of resisting and obstructing and possession of a firearm on school property.
