MERIDIAN A Boise man is in the Ada County Jail, charged with grand theft and driving under the influence after a Meridian home break-in Friday night.

According to police,a man living in the 2600 block of South Knapp in Meridian returned home with his family at about 9:45 p.m. to find his home had been broken into. The homeowner saw that his Suburban had been moved from his driveway into the street. As the man and his family drove up to their house, the Suburban started backing up.

Police said that the homeowner then confronted the stranger who was still behind the wheel of the Suburban. The suspect, later identified by police as Joshua Whitney, 24, of Boise, hit the homeowner in the head with an aluminum can. The homeowner told police he thenwrestled Whitney to the ground.

Police said that after the brief scuffle, Whitney attempted to leave the area, but Ada County Sheriff's Deputies found him nearby and took him into custody.

Whitney was booked into the Ada County Jail on a felony charge of grand theft and driving under the influence. Whitney is expected to be arraigned on the felony charge Monday in district court.
