Boise State installs metal detectors at stadium

The school spent $191,00 on metal detectors and hand wands.
Crews were busy Friday setting up metal detectors at Albertsons Stadium in preparation for Saturday's home opener.

BOISE -- It will be a much different experience getting in to watch the Broncos this season, with metal detectors at the gates.

It's one of the changes connected to the recently passed guns on campus law.

The law does not allow guns inside Albertsons Stadium, but it does permit them in other areas of campus with an enhanced carry license.

The Boise State game against Colorado State will be the first time fans will use the detectors.

But, the process will be different at different gates.

"The walk throughs are going to be more common at these big events, so the gun bill got us talking about it but I think it's something that was going to happen anyways," said Greg Hahn, a Boise State spokesperson.

Boise State says they're still working out where the detectors will go. Hahn says they have 50 walk through detectors and 75 hand wands.

They're also going from 50 security officers to 150.

"The folks doing the screening have been training every week day for the past month, not just on how the process will work but also customer service and that first face of the game," said Hahn.

Hey says the best advice for fans is get there early and try not to bring a bag.

"What we're saying to folks is try to get in the stadium a little earlier than usual, 20 to 30 minutes," said Hahn.

There will also be an express line as a quicker option to get in.

"At every entrance there will be an express line so no bag, clear bag, can go through express line we're hoping those move really quickly," said Hahn.

As more than 31,000 fans pack in the stadium Saturday night, Boise State wants everyone to be patient.

"We're rolling it out tomorrow so it won't be the same at every gate, but we're going to try to keep things moving seamlessly," said Hahn.

As for the cost, the walk through detectors are about two to three thousand a piece.

Those added security officers will be a mix of campus security, Boise police, and a contracted security company.

Boise State has estimated that the total cost for the added security will be about $500,000 upfront and about a million dollars each year.

The University is planning to pay for the changes.

The goal is to keep it fun and accessible, but safer than ever before.
