Boise State University honors 2 Idahoans with honorary doctoral degrees

Former Idaho state senator Cherie Buckner-Webb and Idaho's former governor C.L. "Butch" Otter were presented with degrees for their outstanding accomplishments.

BOISE, Idaho — Boise State University awarded former Idaho state senator Cherie Buckner-Webb and former governor C.L. "Butch" Otter with honorary doctorate degrees at this springs commencement

Buckner-Webb was awarded an honorary doctorate of humane letters and Otter received an honorary doctorate of laws. Honorary doctoral degrees are awarded to people for "outstanding accomplishments in scholarship, creativity, public service, education or contributions to human welfare," stated a press release.

The university stated that Buckner-Webb is a recognized leader and small business owner who served in the legislature and on various boards.

"Four generations of my family have gone to Boise State University and I'm really proud of it," said Buckner-Webb. "My father went to college here. He was the first black athlete, and he lettered in basketball and football. It's his legacy that allowed me to be here today."

Former governor Otter served in the Idaho Army National Guard's 116th Armored Cavalry and served as Idaho's governor for four terms.

"I knew that my mom and dad wanted a better life for every one of us kids just as your parents do and that your parent's parents wanted, and they knew that a good education was the best threshold that you had to cross over in order to have that better life," Otter said during commencement.
