BOISE, Idaho — A current resident of the Boise Rescue Mission’s River of Life shelter has graduated with his GED while participating in the New Life Discipleship & Recovery.
Jack Cook first arrived to the Boise Recue Mission in 2022 and has spent the last two years working to obtain his general education degree.
The New Life program helps men and women end addictions and build the tools and skills to stay addiction free and be self-sufficient members of the community.
Cook said he is thankful for the help he received through that program.
“Not only does it mean a lot to me, but it means a lot to me that it encourages others to attempt to get their GED," said Cook.
Cook says the program and the GED course takes time.
His advice for anyone needing help getting sober or finishing school.
"You know what? Don't give up. There are people out here, there's there's people out here that's willing to work with you. There's great opportunities," Cook said.
"You just have to want to do it. It's never too late, you know, and I'm walking proof of that, 58-years-old, and one year I've learned more than I've learned in the past 40 years, haha," said Cook.
As of Oct. 23, the Boise Rescue Mission said there are 28 men and women participating in the New Life program.
