BOISE -- A dedication ceremony took place today for the Bloch Cancer Survivor Plaza in the east end of Julia Davis Park.
The new plaza was created to give hope and courage to newly diagnosed patients, to inspire determination for those who are fighting the disease, and to reduce fear in those who have not had cancer.
Funding was provided by a $1 million grant from the R.A. Bloch Cancer Foundation, a Kansas City-based organization that has funded 24 parks throughout the United States and Canada.
Local cancer survivor Larry Fisher pushed for construction of a new plaza in Boise.
"I saw the plazas in Tucson and Phoenix and I thought wouldn't it be great if we had one here in Boise," said Fisher. "So I called the R.A. Bloch Foundation and asked if we could have one here. And they said they only build in cities with over one million people, so I had to convince them that we were very deserving and we had a million people in the greater, greater surrounding area."
The plaza includes inspirational messages on stone veneer walls, walkways and a wind sculpture.
