Canyon County sheriff sworn in as National Sheriffs' Association president

Kieran Donahue was sworn in as president of the National Sheriffs' Association on Thursday. He is the first Idaho sheriff to hold the position.

BOISE, Idaho — Canyon County Sheriff Kieran Donahue was sworn in as the president of the National Sheriffs' Association Thursday evening in Washington, D.C.

Donahue is the 84th sheriff to be sworn in as president, but he is the first Idaho sheriff to hold this position.

“It's instrumental and important for the state of Idaho, for the representation in of course the western United States," Donahue said. "And yet, we don't just represent the west now, we represent the nation.”

Donahue is entering his fourth term as Canyon County sheriff. He served on the National Sheriffs' Association for 10 years before becoming president.

He will now be leading more than 3,000 sheriffs nationwide, which Donahue said is important when it comes to Idaho’s representation across the country.

As president, Donahue will be asked to testify to Congress, he will be asked about his opinion on where the country stands nationally and he will provide amicus briefs to the Supreme Court.

“The entire thing is quite humbling," Donahue said. "It’s not something that when I started my career I thought I’d do, but God has a path, and we are here to follow that path.”

Donahue said he wants to lean on his faith to help guide him through his presidency and to be able to highlight and represent the nation. He also wants to focus on national security, domestic violence issues and human trafficking advocacy.

Donahue said the presidency term is one year. In his free time, he said he will take a break by riding his horse, spending time with his family and exploring rural Idaho.
