IDAHO, USA — A new coalition has been formed with the goal of getting a citizens ballot initiative and restoring reproductive healthcare in Idaho. Idahoans United for Women & Families is a nonpartisan organization created by care providers, small business owners, faith leaders and people across the state.
"Research shows three in five Idahoans are against Idaho's extreme restrictions on reproductive care," said Melanie Folwell, campaign spokesperson. "Idahoans want, need and deserve rational, compassionate healthcare, and the Idaho legislature has the power to deliver a fix. But, for two consecutive sessions, they've failed to act."
The coalition stated it will work to advocate for Idahoans restored access to reproductive healthcare, reasonable access to abortion care, protect access to birth control and roll back legislation enacted to punish mothers and doctors for abortions.
"For two sessions, problems with these laws have compounded, yet the Legislature has again failed to act. Some members have even doubled down on the harmful existing laws," Folwell said. "The power to legislate also lies with the people, so if lawmakers refuse to restore adequate healthcare access and medical privacy to the women and doctors of Idaho, we will seek other lawful remedies, including a potential ballot initiative."
