Birth control extension legislation moves to the House floor

The bill would extend coverage of birth control pills to six months.

BOISE, Idaho — An Idaho bill that would require health benefit plans to extend contraception supplies has moved to the House floor after being considered by committee.

On Thursday, Feb. 8, the Idaho Senate passed Senate Bill 1234 with a vote of 19-16. According to the Idaho Legislature website, it was sent to the House for consideration and was moved to the House floor on Monday, Feb. 19.

The bill was first introduced on Jan. 17, and would add language to section 41-1853 of the Idaho Code. The legislation would require health plans that provide prescription contraceptives to last six months, or less if requested.

The bill states many insurance plans in Idaho cover one to three months worth of birth control.

If passed, the legislation will allow health beneficiaries who issued or renewed a health plan after Jan. 1, 2025, to receive six months worth of birth control.

If passed by the House, the bill will move to Governor Little's desk to be signed.
