Tips for handling car trouble from AAA Idaho

With inclement weather upon us, even vehicles with routine maintenance can experience issues.

BOISE, Idaho — Traveling for the holidays is a given for many Gem State residents, and despite best efforts, there may be a time or two where the car breaks down.

AAA Idaho said even with routine maintenance, vehicles can experience issues or break down. The organization provided tips on Friday to guide drivers through car trouble, whether it be during a road trip for the holidays, or driving locally.

  • Slowly steer to the side of the road, out of the way of traffic
  • Put emergency flashers on to alert other motorists
  • Stay in the car if it's safe to do so. Use best judgement on car position, weather, visibility and other chances of getting help.
  • Mark your location, such as writing down mile markers, major landmarks and other signage.
  • Use emergency kit items if needed, like food, water and blankets.

"If you decide to go get help, whether it's with a kind stranger or on your own, leave a note with your name, time, phone number and the direction you traveled," said Matthew Conde, the AAA Idaho public affairs director. "If you're leaving with a Good Samaritan, write down their name and license plate as well."

Conde also said if you need to stay with your vehicle, only run the engine periodically to conserve fuel. AAA Idaho said potential issues with carbon monoxide can be avoided by ensuring the tailpipe is clear of any snow or debris.
