HOMEDALE, Idaho -- Fireworks went off a little early at the Homedale demolition derby Monday night. One of the cars spun out of control and knocked a pole into a crowd of spectators.
Chelsie Ferguson was recording the derby on her digital camera when the accident happened.
We blew it (the video) up on my Play Station 3 and we can actually see a guy with a little baby running and actually running on top of people to get away from the cars, said Ferguson.
Ferguson's video shows one of the demolition derby cars hit another car. The force sent the first car barreling toward the track's barricade. The car hit the barricade. The force of the impact knocked a speaker pole into the crowd.
One spectator was hurt when the pole hit a woman in the head. Ferguson said fortunately most of the crowd saw what was coming and got out of the way in time.
If the cars are coming into the crowd, run. You take off and you get out of there, said Ferguson.
Ferguson said fans of demolition derbies know that accidents are likely to happen. They know to keep their eyes on the cars.
Eyes on the cars, said Ferguson. And make sure that if a car's headed towards you, you just get out of the way, you run. Lots of things get thrown into the crowd, like tires. All kinds of good stuff. But it's a great time. You just have to be a little careful.
Ferguson said the woman was taken to the hospital. She said she has tried to find out the woman's name and her condition, but hasn't heard. People in the crowd told her it didn't look like the woman was seriously hurt.
KTVB contacted the Homedale Ambulance Services, the company that transported the woman to a hospital, but because of federal patient privacy laws, they could not release any information about the spectator or her condition.
