BOISE -- A child was seriously injured while sledding Saturday afternoon, when he collided with a car on Cartwright Road, police said.

The accident happened just north of Bogus Basin Road around 3:15 p.m. Police say the boy, who is described as being under age 10, was sledding down Simplot Hill when he slid into the road and into the side of a passing car.

The boy was taken to a local hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries to his head and face, police at the scene said.

Because of the popularity of Simplot Hill for sledding and its proximity to several busy roads, police say it's important for parents to keep an eye on their kids.

If you're going to come to these hills like this and sled, as a parent you need to make sure that you're checking the conditions and seeing how far the kids are sledding down here, said Boise Police Lt. Brett Quilter. Take the time to make sure that you're between your kids and the road.

Police were on scene investigating for several hours following the accident.
