BOISE, Idaho — The City of Boise has selected the site where it intends to build the city's first water recycling facility that will purify water from businesses and local industries and then recycle it as an additional water supply for Boise.
Boise City Council will advance the $20 million purchase of a 76-acre plot of land on the corner of Warehouse Way and Freight Street, near the WinCo Distribution Center, according to a news release from Boise's Public Works Department.
"This purchase is an investment in our community's water resiliency," said Haley Falconer, Environmental Manager for the City of Boise. "Every gallon of water we keep for local reuse is a gallon of drinking water we preserve. This is a forward-thinking decision that I know we'll look back on and be glad the city had the foresight to make."
Boise officials said the new water supply method will be "drought-proof" and will better prepare the city for future challenges like climate change and growth.
The Public Works Department said water purification methods and technologies are being tested via the city's Advanced Water Treatment Pilot program.
Boise City Council will advance the purchase on Feb. 13, and plan to have the deal closed by the end of the month. The city said it plans to break ground on the project in 2025, with hopes of the facility to begin operating by 2029.
