City leaders celebrate opening of Primrose Park in northwest Boise

Primrose Park is a 1.5-acre space with a playground, open play areas, an outdoor fitness center and accessible parking for ADA vans.

BOISE, Idaho — Nestled away in northwest Boise, a new park bloomed. Primrose Park opened officially to the public Tuesday, giving more than 600 households in the area a new space within walking distance, city leaders said.

Primrose Park is a 1.5-acre space, with a playground, open play areas, an outdoor fitness center and accessible parking for ADA vans. Other key features include a picnic shelter, drinking fountain, bench seating, trees, walking path and pollinator garden.

"We stood here in the fall of last year for a groundbreaking and all that surrounded us was a field with a few trees," Mayor Lauren McLean said. "To see this park come to life, knowing it means even more Boise kids can walk 10-minutes to Primrose Park, is why we are working so hard to add accessible green space in every neighborhood."

Throughout the City of Trees, roughly 72% of residents are within a 10-minute walk to a park or open space, Boise Parks and Recreation said in a news release.

"Opening Primrose Park and seeing the smiles on the faces of kids who now have a place to play so close to where they live gives us even more motivation to find pockets and places across the city to preserve and protect park space," Boise Parks and Recreation Director Doug Holloway said. "We are also excited to add another playground in Boise with equipment for kids of all ages and abilities to enjoy together."

The playground at Primrose Park is an inclusive one, with an inclusive swing set, sensory panels and a bonded rubber surface that is easy for all users to navigate. An inclusive communication board has also been installed at the park.

The park is named for a native pollinator that can be found in the Boise Foothills. The plant can also be found incorporated throughout the park's pollinator garden.
