BOISE -- The City of Boise announced Sunday they are renaming a park in honor of Kristin Armstrong.
During a celebration of the three-time Olympic gold medalist, Boise Mayor Dave Bieter unveiled the new sign for the Kristin Armstrong Municipal Park.
The festivities dubbed “Kristin’s Gold Games – A Community Celebration" were held Sunday afternoon at the newly-named park.
The event focused on Armstrong's accomplishments both as a cyclist and a community leader.
Representatives of senators Mike Crapo and Jim Risch presented her with a flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol Building, and kids from the YMCA gave her medals of honor, signifying each of her Olympic golds.
Then Boise Mayor Dave Bieter announced that the century-old Municipal Park had a new name.
"You're the best ambassador the City of Boise has ever had, bar none," Bieter said before unveiling a new park sign with Armstrong's name on it.
It was an overwhelming and emotional tribute for the Olympian.
"I never imagined in a million years that a park was going to be named after me," she said.
Attendees got the chance to meet Armstrong in person, and enjoy music food, games and activities. Kids took part in various sporting events, with the Olympic gold medalist handing out medals to each child.
Armstrong made history in Rio earlier this month when she became the first female athlete to win gold in the same individual event in three Olympic summer games. She returned home Monday to Boise, where she was met by a cheering crowd of fans.
