BOISE, Idaho — Members of the community gathered at the Fort Boise Military Reserve Cemetery on Memorial Day to attend an annual event honoring those who served in the Civil War.
On Monday, May 27, Idaho Civil War Volunteers (ICWV) dressed in historical Civil War clothing held a 21-gun salute ceremony followed by the playing of the taps in front of a crowd of roughly 50 community members.
Gary Keith with ICWV told KTVB Monday's event is important to remember those who served in the war and to understand the "roots" of Memorial Day.
"I hope when people see these types of events, it inspires them to learn more," Keith said. "Pick up a [historical book] and learn about your ancestors and to be grateful for their sacrifices."
A community member, Tanya Rasmussen, told KTVB they attend Memorial Day events every year because it's important to teach their kids about understanding our history to better our future.
