BOISE — Anyone who needs to visit the Departments of Motor Vehicles will want to do so before Thursday, Aug 9, or else they will have to wait a few days. DMV offices across Idaho will close on August 9 and 10 for a computer system upgrade.
"We're upgrading because we currently run on a very old system. It's actually a mainframe system that was developed in the 80s, and as you can imagine, technology has really changed since the 80s," said Idaho Transportation Department spokesman Jake Melder.
The computer system overhaul comes after repeated outages at DMV locations across the state in recent months.
The closure will affect all county DMV offices that issue driver's licenses and identification cards.
"The new system is going to improve the speed that the customer service reps at the counter will be able to transaction all of the processes that they need to do and hopefully provide better customer service," Melder said.
The DMV offices will reopen on August 13, but ITD warns anyone who plans on going to the DMV that day to expect delays.
"Even though we've been training our county workers on this new software, anything new is going to take some time to adjust, so there may be longer than expected wait times immediately after the software gets implemented," Melder said.
