ISP: Driver shot and killed after high-speed pursuit on I-84

Westbound Interstate 84 was closed for several hours on Monday morning, after Idaho State Police stopped a speeding vehicle.

MOUNTAIN HOME, Idaho — According to Idaho State Police (ISP), the Elmore County Sheriff's Office is going to take the lead on an investigation of an incident that took place just after midnight on Sept. 9.

ISP reports that shortly after midnight on Monday, a trooper near milepost 173 on Interstate 84 in Jerome County watched as a Honda Accord drove westbound at a high speed. A second trooper also saw the car, and attempted to do a traffic stop.

The driver allegedly failed to stop, and both troopers followed the car, going westbound. According to ISP, several attempts were made to stop the car using spike strips.

Near milepost 98, spike strips were successfully used and the car came to a stop. Troopers gave verbal commands to the driver, ISP said. During the attempted arrest, shots were fired, striking the driver. Emergency medical aid was given to the driver, however he died from his injuries at the scene.

Elmore County Sheriff's Office will take custody of the driver, and will release identity after family notification.

Westbound Interstate 84 will be closed at milepost 98 for the investigation, which officials believe may take several hours.

There were no other injuries were reported.
