ITD: Drivers using I-84 in Caldwell should expect delays as traffic will shift this weekend

ITD stated that over the next two weeks, it will shift traffic to only use eastbound I-84 lanes between Centennial Way and Franklin Road interchanges.

BOISE, Idaho — Those who commute to work or use I-84 in Caldwell should expect delays as a year-long construction project is expected to begin. The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) announced beginning on Saturday it will be shifting traffic between Centennial Way and Franklin Road interchanges.

According to ITD, the westbound lanes on I-84 will be closed to allow its crews to begin widening the road. Over the next two weekends in June, officials will shift traffic to use only the eastbound lanes. The shifted traffic will remain until the summer of 2025, and drivers should expect delays.

The department said, "This project will increase capacity and improve traffic flow for years to come."

ITD provided a list of what drivers should expect:

  • All lanes of I-84 will be on the eastbound side. Two lanes will be open in each direction, but lanes will be narrower.
  • Traffic will use temporary off-ramps at Centennial Way and 10th Avenue (Exits 27 and 28). Temporary ramps will be shorter and may have fewer lanes than current ramps.
  • Frontage Road and Hannibal Street will be reduced to one-way traffic with flaggers.
  • Intermittent closures on 10th Avenue will begin in July.
  • The pedestrian overpass over I-84 will be closed and detoured to 10th Avenue in late summer.
