City of Boise, partners to launch electric vehicle carshare

Starting Dec. 6, Boise will have a new way to get around town.

BOISE, Idaho — There's a new way to get around town.

The City of Boise is partnering with Idaho Power, J. Fisher Companies, St. Luke's and Forth to provide two carsharing sites. Starting Dec. 6, Boise residents can register, reserve and drive an electric vehicle.

The electric vehicles will be available 24/7 to rent hourly, said the City of Boise.

One car will be at the new Franklin Apartments, off of Franklin Road and Orchard Street. The second car will be near St. Luke's Boise Medical Center downtown, off Broadway Avenue and Warm Springs Avenue, near the Ronald McDonald House.

The City of Boise said that carsharing is an alternative to owning a car. Car ownership comes with high costs, like repairs and insurance. These electric vehicle carshares are an option for those looking for other options than owning a car.

Drivers of the rented electric cars must be approved in advance of reserving the electric car. Approval can be done via a smartphone app called Mobility Development Operations (MDO) Carshare, said a City of Boise spokesperson.
