BOISE, Idaho — A couple died after a house fire in Emmett. Officials said the woman died the night of the fire and the husband was in critical condition at a Utah hospital, but requested to return to Emmett where he later died days later.
According to Emmett Fire Chief Mike Welch, the fire department received a call of a structure fire around 11:35 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at 2827 E. Black Canyon Highway in Emmett.
Welch said that when the fire department arrived at the home, the front half was engulfed in flames, smoke bellowed out the windows, and two vehicles were on fire.
Welch said the house fire was put out in roughly 30 minutes or around midnight. However, the vehicles were put out later because of a downed live powerline near them, and firefighters had to wait for the power to be cut before those were put out.
Four people were at the home at the time of the fire.
The Gem County Coroner, John Buck, confirmed Diana Bade, 76, was inside the home and died of smoke inhalation.
Two grandchildren were uninjured from the fire and were assisted out of the home by Bill Bade, 76, who received first and second-degree burns over roughly 30% of his body, Welch said. Bill was taken to the University of Utah Health Care- Intermountain Burn Center for his injuries.
Buck told KTVB Bill chose to return to Emmett and wanted to die at home. Bill died days later.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal.
"The entire situation is tragic," Buck said.
