BOISE, Idaho — The attorney representing the families of two of the victims killed in the private jet hangar collapse on Boise Airport property filed a notice of intent to sue the city.
In their notice of intent filed with the City of Boise, the families of Mario Sontay Tzi and Mariano Coc Och, who were killed in the January 31 Boise hangar collapse, say they could seek damages totaling $30 million. The damages would include $15 million for each family under three different damage claims.
The attorney representing the families, Enrique Serna, told KTVB the damages are for economic, non-economic, and punitive damages.
Their notice of intent to file a tort claim states the families may sue the City of Boise and its contracted engineers, who approved plans that were deficient and included flaws in the structural design of the hangar. The document states, "Inadequate bracing of the beams and columns and all connections have been identified and are present in the plans as approved."
Serna says the notice of intent to file a tort claim means the families may or may not sue the city. Idaho code requires someone file a notice against a government agency within 180 days after an incident occurs in order for a potential future lawsuit to proceed.
Craig Durrant, 59, was the third victim killed in the collapse. He is the brother of the owner of Big D Builders, Inc., the steel contractor in charge of the project. Durrant was listed as a director of the company in a 2021 state filing.
As KTVB previously reported, records show Big D Builders applied for a permit to remove and demolish all the steel and concrete at the site on West Wright Street on April 3.
Serna said they plan to file a lawsuit against companies and agencies involved by Friday, June 14.
