BOISE, Idaho — Boise Fire Department and Boise Police Department (BPD) are investigating a widespread arson fire at Castle Hills Park playground that resulted in a "total loss of playground equipment."
BPD confirmed that the fire was set intentionally and therefore is being investigated as arson.
Fire crews responded to a "large playground fire" on North Eugene Street just after midnight on Tuesday, Feb. 6. At approximately 1:30 a.m., Boise police officers were called to the scene to begin an arson investigation.
"This is a very disappointing situation, and we are working closely with Boise Police, Boise Fire, and the city's Risk and Safety team on next steps," said Boise Parks and Recreation Director Doug Holloway. "The playground is insured, but we anticipate the clean-up and costs to replace the equipment will be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars."
A Boise City Fire investigator and detectives with Boise Police Department are monitoring the area and collecting additional evidence and surveillance video.
Officials with Boise fire and police departments are working with the city's Risk and Safety department to establish a timeline for replacement of items ruined and the reopening of the playground.
