BOISE, Idaho — It was the first day of school Wednesday for students throughout the Treasure Valley, including Capital High School in the Boise School District. Around 23,000 students started across the Boise School District.
Capital hosted a celebration Wednesday morning for its students – kicking the year off with a pep rally assembly and tunnel for students to walk through to get into the first day.
Principal Derek Gardner said Capital hosts an exciting first day to get students ready and to make them feel included.
“We are just going to focus on our school culture – making this place a place that is welcoming for everybody and all our students feel comfortable here,” Gardner said. “That’s our number one primary goal.”
Gardner said all the staff and teachers are just excited to have students back.
“All the prep work pays off on a day like today,” Gardner said.
Teachers were also excited to be at the first day. For Nancy Stephen, it was a bittersweet opening day, as she has been teaching for 34 years and is retiring after this year.
“It’s my last first day,” Stephen said.
She said Capital High School always has a big first-day celebration, something teacher Heidi Trunnel agreed with.
“We really want to leave a good impression for their first day and set the year right,” Trunnel said.
