First responders promote 'slow down, move over' laws

As a part of a nationwide tour, local emergency responders worked to promote road safety.

BOISE — BOISE -- "Slow down, move over, it's the law," that's the message first responders and tow truck drivers came together to share Tuesday.

This a message they say will save lives.

As a part of the nationwide, Spirit Ride Tour, Treasure Valley law enforcement and local tow truck companies were part of an event in Boise to remind the public about the dangers first responders face on the side of the road.

According to a poll by the National Safety Commission, 71 percent of Americans have not heard of "move over" laws.

Those are laws that require passing vehicles to move over one lane or slow down when approaching an incident.

They are intended to help keep first responders safe, but tow truck drivers are working on scene as well. Idaho state troopers say the message is important because the danger is something they face every day.

"It's pretty nerve-racking, I’m supposed to be focused on the traffic stop or the crash that I’m on, as well as watching traffic that is going by. So that's why we encourage people to take that worry away from us and just move over and slow down on stops," said Trooper Justin Ward with the Idaho State Police.

After the ceremony, police and tow trucks gathered to escorted "spirit," an elaborately painted casket to pay tribute to first responders who have paid the ultimate sacrifice working the white line.

The awareness procession then headed from Boise to Nampa.

The tour will next head to Ontario, Oregon.
