First responders warn of dangerous conditions in Payette, Snake rivers

Water levels are expected to become hazardous Tuesday, exceeding 9 feet and/or 10,000 cubic feet per second (cfs).

PAYETTE COUNTY, Idaho — Several local organizations warned water recreationists Tuesday of exceedingly dangerous water conditions in the Payette River and Snake River.

The Payette County Sheriff's Office, along with New Plymouth Fire Protection District, Payette Fire Department and Sand Hollow Fire District said in a news release that water levels are expected to become hazardous Tuesday night, reaching 9 feet and/or 10,000 cubic feet per second (cfs).

In combination with the usual annual snowmelt run-off, recent rainfall and an anticipated heatwave are prompting officials from various counties to issue the river advisories.

Payette County Sheriff Andy Creech urged the public to avoid river activities altogether until river levels recede. "It is imperative that you prioritize your safety and the safety of others," he said.

Monitor river levels online via the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) website.

Safety tips for river recreation:

  • Check Conditions: Always check river conditions and weather forecasts before heading out. Avoid the river during high water levels or swift currents.
  • Wear a Life Jacket: Ensure everyone (especially underage children) wears a properly fitted and U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket on all watercrafts to include float tubes, kayaks, or any sized boat.
  • Avoid Alcohol: Do not consume alcohol before or during water activities.
  • Supervise Children: Always keep a close watch on children around water.
  • Know Your Limits: Only experienced swimmers should enter the river, and never alone.
  • Stay Informed: Pay attention to local news and weather updates and heed any advisories or warnings from local authorities.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Carry a whistle or other signaling device and know how to call for help if needed.
