NAMPA, Idaho — An officer with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) reported a dead juvenile swan on Nov. 9 at the 7-mile Slough Access near Emmett.
The swan was found within the Payette River Wildlife Management Area, which is open to the public, according to IDFG. Based on the condition of the swan at the time it was found, officers believe it was shot sometime between Nov. 4 and Nov. 8.
Swans are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and there is no swan hunting season in the Southwest Region of Idaho.
Officials said swans can only be harvested in portions of northern Idaho under a controlled hunt, which is highly regulated.
Anyone with information on the incident is encouraged to call the Idaho Fish and Game Southwest Regional Office at 208-465-8465, or make a report online by clicking here.
Calling the Citizens Against Poaching hotline is also encouraged, available at 1-800-632-5999. Those who call will remain anonymous and a reward is being offered for a lead that results in a citation.
