Flood warning in effect for Weiser River

Forecasters say flooding in the area is likely to be "minor."

WEISER -- A flood warning is in effect in the Weiser area Tuesday as rain and continued melting cause the river to overflow its banks.

The National Weather Service in Boise issued the flood warning for the Weiser River late Sunday night; that warning will remain in place through Wednesday afternoon.

But forecasters say flooding in the area is likely to be "minor."

The river is expected to rise above the flood stage baseline - 9.5 feet - by early Tuesday, reaching a peak of 10.2 feet later Tuesday evening. Water is expected to recede Wednesday.

At 10.3 feet, "floodwaters will approach the Cove Road bridge over the Weiser river making it unsafe to cross," according to the Weather Service.

Although the river was moving fast and appeared higher than normal early Tuesday morning, it had not caused any significant flooding or damaged any of the homes in the area as of about 7 a.m.

KTVB Meteorologist Larry Gebert said highs in the upper 50s and projected thunderstorms will contribute to the flooding concerns.

High water damaged property and threatened residents earlier this month when an ice jam blocked the Weiser River. One man had to be evacuated by a National Guard helicopter after floodwaters reached several feet inside his home.

Water levels in that flood were measured at 12.5 feet, much higher than the projections for Tuesday.

Forecasters are also keeping an eye on the Malhuer River near Vale, which is expected to rise "rapidly" and exceed flood stage late Tuesday night. The high water will recede by Thursday, according to the NAtional Weather Service.

At its highest, the Malheur River is expected to hit 20.5 feet, just above the flood stage of 19.5 feet. If levels get that high, residents can expect some minor flooding on county roads near the river, including Westfall Road near Harper.
