FRUITLAND, Idaho — During a routine city council meeting Monday, Fruitland Mayor Brian Howell resigned from his position citing "health issues."
City Attorney Stephanie Bonney announced before city council that due to health reasons, Fruitland's mayor has decided to resign, effective immediately. Howell was not present at the April 8 meeting, according to city documents.
Council President Kari Peterson will act as mayor while city council deliberates on who will be appointed to serve as the interim mayor until the next general election, according to Bonney.
Meeting records documented that the council voted to postpone the appointment of Howell's successor to a later, undetermined date "to allow time for considerations."
Specific health issues prompting Howell's resignation were not disclosed to KTVB.
The next general election and mayoral appointment is in November of 2025.
