BOISE, Idaho — Nearly two years after the Plantation Island Greenbelt Bridge was removed due to catastrophic flooding on the Boise River, the bridge is back in place.
A crane hoisted the massive steel structure into place Monday over a popular path along the Boise Greenbelt, about one mile east of the Western Idaho Fairgrounds in Garden City.
Installation comes after months of fundraising by the Idaho Foundation for Parks and Lands.
"We had a wonderful system, but the minute it was taken out by Mother Nature, it kind of broke," said Judy Peavey-Derr with the Idaho Foundation for Parks and Lands. "It's a critical piece to the overall construction of the bike path and its use, and so for people going to work and for recreation and everything, we didn't realize how valuable this connection was. We're thrilled that it's back in place."
But before you break out your bicycles and head down that part of the path more work needs to be completed.
Crews will be working on repaving and reconstructing the path for at least the next week.
