WALLACE, Idaho-- The northern Idaho city of Wallace plans to honor a Wallace native by renaming a 1.7-mile route through town The Harry F. Magnuson Way.
The city plans a public dedication ceremony on Saturday at the northern Pacific Depot during the Depot Days celebration. Magnuson, one of Idaho's giants in industry and philanthropy, died at age 85 in 2009.
He is credited with helping save the historic mining town of Wallace, where he was born in 1923, by preventing an Interstate 90 freeway corridor from being built through town.
Road construction required condemning and flattening buildings, but Magnuson sued the Idaho Transportation Department for having failed to file an Environmental Impact Statement, and eventually prevailed in protecting the city.
