Historic Caldwell house to finish last leg of journey to new location

The John C. Rice house will be moved to its final location on the morning of June 30.

CALDWELL, Idaho — The historic John C. Rice house in Caldwell will finish the final stretch of its journey towards its new location. Once the house is fully moved into its new location, it will be renovated and leased to first responders.

Rice was an Idaho Supreme Court Justice and a main founding contributor to the College of Idaho.

The last move will happen on the morning of June 30 between midnight and 8 a.m. The new location is the corner of Kimball and Chicago in Caldwell. People can watch the move, but the Caldwell Housing Authority has asked that people not park along the route. People can learn more about the house and the route here

The house was built in 1895 by Rice and was originally located near the college of Idaho campus.

During the move the Caldwell Housing Authority has said there will be some disruptions for people living along the route.

"The housing authority will make every effort to be the least intrusive and cause the least disruption possible to the neighbors and traffic.  We hope neighbors in the community will understand some noises and lane blockages are required during the tree trimming process. Off-street parking may also be limited for a short time," the Rice house website states.

KTVB previously reported that although the moving distance is only about two miles, the house will also need a total remodel before it is turned into a building for first responders.
