Historical Boise swimming pools are getting a makeover

The City of Boise is remodeling two historic pools to keep up with newer regulations.

BOISE, Idaho — Two of the oldest facilities within the Boise Park and Recreation program are getting a much-needed makeover. Lowell and South Pool were both constructed in 1953 and have been up and running since.

The city said that both pools are not compliant with various codes and accessibility for those who use mobility devices.

The City of Boise seeks to continue using the Lowell Pool, which will be renovated to ensure safety and accessibility standards for the public, the city said.

However, the South Pool will be replaced with a new pool to be built at Whitney Elementary School in partnership with the Boise School District. For the future of the South Pool structure, the City of Boise is seeking community input on how it will be utilized.

Mayor Lauren McLean states, "Opening these pools is a priority and we've heard loud and clear from residents that access to safe, affordable swimming options in their neighborhoods is important,"This path forward highlights the historic significance of Lowell Pool and the Wesley Bintz design, while creating a new, regional pool facility for families on the Boise Bench and beyond. Both are important investment with Boise's past, present and future in mind.""

The next steps in the process will be finalizing the pool designs and costs. This budget will be included within the fiscal year of the City of Boise for the year of 2025.

In regards to public input of the South Pool input, a future public hearing will be announced.
