How an expired Idaho license will affect your travel plans

If your license has expired recently, TSA will still accept it at airports.

BOISE — For those of you traveling this weekend with an expired driver’s license, there are a few things you should know.

The Idaho Transportation Department has put in place an emergency extension through October 31st, covering all drivers whose license has expired between July and September of this year.

ITD says all law enforcement is aware of this extension on the chance you get pulled over.

And if your flying with a recently expired license, ITD says not to worry.

"You are fine if your license is expired with TSA for up to one year, so you actually have a 12 month or one-year grace period with TSA. So, don't worry about it at the airport right now, you may have to worry about it at federal buildings or other places but as far as the airports go, you should be able to fly with your license as long as it’s not expired more than 12 months," says Vince Trimboli with ITD.

Trimboli says that goes for airports around the country.

Also, if you plan on purchasing alcohol, all state-run liquor stores will accept expired ID's under the same guidelines ITD put out, your license had to lapse between July and September and the extension only goes until October 31st.

As for getting into bars, it’s a case-by-case situation.

ITD says all county locations should be able to issue drivers licenses by Friday, except for the Lewiston location, which will not be open until September 4.
