‘I let her down’: Caldwell woman buried in wrong grave

A Caldwell woman was buried in a gravesite different from the one she had requested. Now, her daughter is suing the city.

CALDWELL, Idaho — When Elaine Reese was diagnosed with skin cancer, she planned her whole funeral, including where she wanted to be buried. She requested to be laid to rest in the Canyon Hill Cemetery, under a tree and away from the road. But where she rests now is not the spot she chose.

“Every time I come out, you have the grief of losing your mother plus feeling like you let her down,” said Reese’s daughter, Kathy Blume.

Blume is now planning to sue the city of Caldwell for not burying her mom in the spot she requested.

When Reese passed, Blume thought everything was set for her burial until she walked to the graveside service and realized her mom was in the wrong spot.

“The whole time my husband and I are just screaming inside this isn't right, this isn't what she wanted,” Blume said.

After the funeral, Blume contacted the City of Caldwell to ask why her mom was in the wrong spot. She said the city told her there was a tree root growing there.

Blume said they ended up moving Reese, but still not to where she wanted to be. She already filed a tort claim against the City.

The City of Caldwell said it cannot comment on the matter at this time but did pay for the costs of reburial as a good-faith gesture.
