Idaho county scrutinizes sheriff, clerk pay raises

SANDPOINT, Idaho -- Commissioners in northern Idaho's Bonner County are having a panel scrutinize pay raises awarded to local government employees without their approval, only their acknowledgement.

The Bonner County Daily Bee reports commissioners voted last week to have the county's job evaluation committee look at the raises for sheriff's personnel and thee deputy clerks.

The newspaper previously reported the raises in the county clerk's office ranged from an additional $9,555 to $12,085 a year.

The pay hikes were proposed by sheriff Daryl Wheeler and clerk Marie Scott but not vetted through the job evaluation panel, in accordance with a process that has been in place for years.

The commissioners believed they only had authority to acknowledge the raises implemented by another elected official, but have since been advised to the contrary.
