Idaho DMV issuing paper tests due to test outages

The DMV stated its testing stations have recently experienced intermittent outages, prompting the decision to return to the original testing form of pen and paper.

BOISE, Idaho — The Idaho Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced Wednesday it will be issuing paper tests instead of online, digital tests for Idahoans taking their driver's knowledge tests due to outages at the driver's testing stations.

In a news release, the DMV stated its testing stations have recently experienced intermittent outages, prompting the decision to return to the original testing platform of the classic pen/pencil and paper.

The Gem State uses touch-screen computer stations for the knowledge test, which is the written portion of the driving test, for new drivers and residents.

Idaho is one of several states experiencing the outage issue with the stations, which are provided by a third-party vendor, according to the DMV.

"We are taking immediate action to make architectural changes to alleviate the interruptions in service," a representative for the vendor said.

The DMV said it created the paper tests on May 29 for when the testing stations go down. However, it is up to each driver's license office to implement the paper tests.

"While paper tests may be old school, they are reliable. We'll do whatever we can to provide continuity of service for our customers," explained DMV administrator Lisa McClellan.
