BOISE, Idaho — For over 11 years the Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Health (BCIFH) program puts on the Mayor's Walking Challenge. According to the BCIFH, The challenge is to encourage mayors to walk over 10,000 steps a day in the month of October and earn $1,000. Mayors who averaged 5,000 steps a day earned $500.
According to a news release, by BCIFH, this year, 108 Idaho mayors participated and raised $93,500. In comparison to last year, where there were 98 participating mayors which raised $85,500. This makes it the highest amount of money raised in Idaho for this challenge.
"The Mayor's Walking Challenge continues to grow and provides a way for Idaho mayors to be active and earn funds for their communities," Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Health Senior Program Officer Courtney Frost said.
The funds raised go to projects as well as programs to encourage physical activity. According to the press release the money supports "a variety of projects and programs that promote a healthy lifestyle, including playgrounds, physical education equipment for schools, park amenities, scholarships for youth programs, and more."
