Caldwell's Fire Bond vote to be recounted Monday

A bond to rebuild two Caldwell fire stations barely passed in November. A citizen who recently ran for office has requested a recount.

Canyon County will conduct a recount of the city of Caldwell’s fire bond vote.

The recount will take place Monday beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Canyon County Election’s Office, said Joe Decker, a spokesperson for the county, via an emailed announcement.

In Idaho, bonds require an in-favor vote of 66.67% to pass. Caldwell’s fire bond received 66.74% votes in favor (2,902 votes), with 33.26% of voters (1,446 votes) voting against the measure, according to results posted on Canyon County’s election results page.

In other words, the outcome was incredibly close — if the bond had only received four fewer votes in favor, only 66.42% would be in favor, and the measure would not have passed.

Because the difference between the yes votes and the no votes is less than 0.1% of the total votes, any citizen could request a recount for free, Decker said.

In a letter the county provided as part of its emailed recount announcement, Nicole Hyland, a candidate for Caldwell School Board who lost the race for the board’s fourth seat in November, is listed as the applicant requesting the fire bond recount.

The fire bond would cost $17 million, and would allow for the rebuild of Station 1 and a new Station 4, as previously reported. The cost to homeowners is expected to be approximately $3 per month, assuming a median home value of $374,000 and a primary residence homeowner’s exemption, according to a press release from the city.
