Idaho State Police troopers have returned from a three-week mission to the U.S.-Mexico border, Gov. Brad Little announced Wednesday via news release.
This mission, announced in January, is part of several moves Little has made to show that he is helping secure the border. The border and immigration have been hot topics recently.
“Dispatching our Idaho State troopers to aid Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) at the border was a crucial step in strengthening cross-state law enforcement efforts and combatting illicit activities such as human trafficking,” ISP Lt. Col. Sheldon Kelley said in the release. “Our troopers acquired invaluable insights and firsthand experience while helping fortify border security measures. We are committed to leveraging this collaboration to improve overall safety and security, ensuring the well-being of communities in Idaho.”
The 10 troopers worked with Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and “deepened ISP troopers’ understanding of trafficking operations,” according to the release. The information learned will be added to Domestic Highway Enforcement courses for Idaho law enforcement officers, the release said.
Little has dispatched troopers to the border before.
Last year, the cost to deploy the Idaho State Police troopers to the border was just under $200,000, as previously reported. This year, the Legislature approved another $200,000 for a training mission.
