NAMPA, Idaho — This article originally appeared in the Idaho Press.
The city of Nampa announced Tuesday that its longtime water tower will be torn down later this week and eventually replaced with a newer model.
The metal tower, which stands over 100 feet tall, is an identifiable community feature for those driving into or leaving Nampa on the east side of town. Positioned on the south side of Interstate 84, the tower, which has the city’s name emblazoned across it, is located directly across from Centennial Golf Course and about 2.5 miles west of the Ford Idaho Center.
According to the city’s news release, the tower was first installed in the early 1970s and “has reached its end of life and needs to be replaced with a new tank which will also provide additional water storage capacity.”
The news release did not provide a specific time or day the tower would be torn down, only saying, “The existing water tower is expected to be removed by the end of the week so construction can begin on a new tank in the same location.”
The city said that it decided to tear down and replace the tower following a 2018 community survey.
The release said that the new water tank will be ground level at about 46 feet tall with an 80-foot diameter; made of concrete; and hold 1.5 million gallons of water.
The project will include a new well, booster station and building to house the pumps, valves and controls, the city said.
The new tank will serve multiple purposes, which include maintaining pressure in the system and providing stored water in case of emergency, the news release stated.
The entire project is anticipated to be completed by spring 2025 and cost $8.2 million, the city said.
