NAMPA, Idaho — This article originally appeared in the Idaho Press.
Planning for the next chapter of the former Hispanic Cultural Center of Idaho located at 315 Stampede Drive, the city of Nampa has requested applicants for a new committee, the Nampa Community & Cultural Advisory Group.
The formation of the group follows community complaints and claims of mismanagement pushing the city to take control of the Stampede Drive facility in July. Since then, the city council has been discussing how to best manage the building while meeting the community’s needs.
The Nampa City Council passed a resolution to form the advisory group as a means for the community to collaborate on plans for the building’s future operations. The group is intended to help ensure that the building is used for its original intent – serving the Hispanic community, the city said in a news release.
Mayor Debbie Kling will be receiving applications to fill positions for two Nampa citizens, two Nampa business owners or employees and three representatives from local non-profit, educational or service organizations.
The press release listed the following initiatives as points of focus for the group:
- Providing insights into how the facility can effectively serve the Hispanic community as well as other members of the community.
- Collaborate with other community initiatives/agencies to identify the needs of the population.
- Provide input into how to support the recognition, preservation and celebration of the Hispanic culture.
- Help ensure the facility provides a variety of economic development activities including job training initiatives as well as community programs for youth, young adults, families and seniors.
- Provide input into funding opportunities to help ensure the long-term sustainability of the facility.
The advisory group will include up to two Nampa City Council members and multiple non-voting representatives from the city. In addition, the city has invited representatives from the following organizations to participate in the group:
- Idaho Hispanic Foundation
- Idaho Hispanic Chamber of Commerce
- Community Council of Idaho
- PODER of Idaho
- Boys & Girls Club of Canyon County
These organizations do not account for the three available seats for local non-profits, according to Nampa Director of Communications Amy Bowman.
Applicants must submit a letter of interest with a completed application by Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024. Documents can be sent to mayor@cityofnampa.us or delivered to 411 3rd Street South.
The application and more information can be found on the city’s website.
