CALDWELL, Idaho — This article originally appeared in the Idaho Press.
Former Boise State and NFL Linebacker Shea McClellin will be the new head football coach at Vallivue High School, the school announced Friday morning, pending board approval.
McClellin was the head coach at Marsing, his alma mater, for the last two seasons. In his first year with Marsing, the Huskies went 1-8. But this past season, he led them to a 5-4 record and a playoff berth for the first time since 2013 and was named the 2A Western Idaho Conference Coach of the Year.
Now, he brings his playing and coaching acumen to Vallivue High School.
He comes to a team that will have a new head coach for the second year in a row. Last season was Brynie Robinson’s first season after taking over for longtime head coach Layne Coffin, who spent 17 years with the Falcons.
Vallivue went 3-6 and missed the playoffs last season, but has traditionally hovered around the middle of the pack in the 4A Southern Idaho Conference since joining in 2016. With McClellin now leading the team, there’s excitement that he can continue to build Vallivue’s program, given he brought Marsing to the playoffs in just two seasons.
“His vision, passion for football and student athletes as well as his desire to be part of the Vallivue community makes him a great fit for our school and program,” Vallivue Athletic Director Kris Knowles said in a press release. “We welcome Shea to the Vallivue team, and look forward to what the future of Vallivue Football holds.”
After a stellar career at Boise State, McClellin was drafted in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft by the Chicago Bears. He spent four years in Chicago and two with the New England Patriots, winning Super Bowl 51 with the Patriots in 2017. He retired ahead of the 2018 season due to concussion issues. McClellin had offers to coach at the college and pro levels, but decided to return home to coach high school.
