CASCADE, Idaho — On Tuesday, the organizers of the Idaho Sled Dog Challenge (ISDC) announced the cancelation of the 2024 ceremonial start, the 100-mile race and the 300-mile race, due to trail conditions.
Despite most events being canceled, the Warm Lake Stage Race is still a go, taking place on Jan. 24 through Jan. 25.
The organizers of the event have been monitoring trail conditions in the weeks leading up to the event, and recently made the decision to cancel as trail conditions worsened over the past several weeks.
"Trail conditions have rapidly deteriorated over the last several days with above-freezing temperatures and rain," race founder and organizer Jerry Wortley said. "According to weather forecasts, conditions will continue to get worse, making the trails unsafe for the dogs and their mushers."
This year is the sixth year for the Idaho Sled Dog Challenge and it's the first year the race is operating independent of the annual McCall Winter Carnival, which is also undergoing to schedule changes this year.
The ISDC is part of the Rocky Mountain Triple Crown, which includes Race to the Sky in Lincoln, Mont. and Eagle Cap Extreme near Joseph, Ore. However, the Oregon race was canceled for 2024 due to the lack of snow this season.
