The Idaho Potato Drop is a signature New Year’s Eve Celebration that has garnered national and even global recognition. Each New Years eve thousands of people, some from out of state and even out of country, gather to watch a giant potato drop in front of the Idaho State Capital building. It’s much like gathering in time square to watch the ball drop, but with a few very ‘Idaho’ twists. Skiers and snowboards compete in a snow jump competition in downtown Boise on a jump created by snow trucked in from Idaho’s mountains. The winner of the competition gets to kick-off the countdown. In years past, the athlete had fireworks attached to their ski gear.
