Local law enforcement show support for fallen officer

Local agencies will be attending the funeral of slain Sgt. Greg Moore.
Troopers around Idaho are wearing black bands around their badges to show support for Sgt. Greg Moore.

BOISE -- Law enforcement agencies from all around Idaho, and much of the Northwest, are mourning the loss of Sgt. Greg Moore who was shot and killed in the line of duty Tuesday while on patrol.

The accused shooter, 26-year-old Jonathan Renfro, is in police custody after a three-hour manhunt.

Now, local agencies are coming together with plans to show their support for the fallen officer.

"It certainly a tragedy that impacts much of Idaho and certainly the law enforcement community in Idaho," said Major Steve Richardson with Idaho State Police.

Richardson said troopers around the state are showing their support for Sgt. Moore by wearing black bands across their badges, a tradition that goes back many years.

"Just a way to visibly support and show respect for that officer and their family," said Richardson.

ISP is helping to investigate the shooting of Sgt. Moore, but as Richardson explains it's tough for troopers working in the Coeur d'Alene district because many knew and worked closely with Moore.

"A lot of them will have a role, as virtually all law enforcement agencies in some fashion, in supporting Sgt. Moore's family and honoring him as an officer in the upcoming days, and with a funeral in the future," Richardson said.

Richardson said he anticipates having representatives from every ISP district attend that funeral, something many agencies will do.

Boise Chief of Police Bill Bones confirms plans are being made by the Boise Police Department to send an honor guard and motor officers to assist with the escort during memorial services for Sgt. Moore.

Moore's funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Lake City High School at 6101 N. Ramsey Road in Coeur d'Alene. It will be open to the public.

A procession is set for Thursday to bring Moore's body back to Coeur d'Alene.

His body was moved Wednesday morning to Spokane for an autopsy as part of the criminal investigation.

Gov. Butch Otter has directed that all flags at state facilities be lowered to half-staff in honor of Moore.

Eagle Police Chief Patrick Calley said the Ada County Sheriff's Office Honor Guard would also be helping out in the coming days.

"Honor guards will come throughout the region probably throughout the country and they will gather," said Calley.

Calley heads up that honor guard and remembers when in 2007 when they traveled to Moscow for the memorial service of fallen officer Lee Newbill from the Moscow Police Department.

Each time is never easy, explains Calley.

"After 25 years you start to realize when an officer dies, a part of the community dies with them, and it's a pretty significant void that is left behind," he said.
