KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho — One person was killed and another was injured when a car crashed into a tree near Fourth Street and Dalton Avenue, between Coeur d'Alene High School and Dalton Gardens, on Friday morning.

The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office said it responded to the crash after reports of a vehicle crashing into a tree and the driver being unconscious.

KCSO said medical units attempted to perform CPR on the driver but pronounced the driver dead on the scene. The passenger was transported to a local hospital with critical but non-life-threatening injuries.

KCSO Traffic Investigation Units also responded to the scene to investigate the incident.

KCSO says 4th Street from Dalton Avenue to Hanley Avenue is blocked while the incident is under investigation and they expect the roadway to be blocked for a couple of hours until the scene can be cleared.

KCSO says it is unknown what caused the crash, but it is believed that the driver suffered a medical episode.

This is a developing story. Further details will be added as they become available.
